ZK pro-model plates

plate prototype / stack of 14, originally uploaded by INV/ALT.

This plate prototype is the first in a series of pro-model ceramics which I am inviting friends to invent. The ZK pro-model plate is a dinner plate with a curled lip which replaces the need for a knife (or fingers) - instead of chasing peas around your plate with a fork, just push the food onto your fork using the curled lip of this plate.

This initial prototype lacks consistency from one plate to the next since I am just eyeballing the curve of each plate, but I'm going ahead with a limited-run production since they still work and they even stack - though slightly crooked. I think I'm finally starting to accept the fact that I cannot produce factory-perfect ceramics, and no amount of obsessing can smooth-out evidence of the human touch in my work.

To see more photos and process of making the pro-model plates, check out the flickr studio tour.

Next on the pro-model plate timeline: glazing (at the request of ZK, a glaze which will not screech with the touch of utensils) and filming of the demonstration flipbook.

and stay tuned for the next pro-model ceramic prototype: the RC S+P
